Two years...

Just realized I've passed two years of running this blog! Thanks goes out to everyone who has passed by, and more thanks to those who have returned.

I'm still looking for that Prince Buster "Freedom Street" so send it over if you've got it! Also send me an email if you want on my record selling mailing list!

Stay tuned... BIG BIG up to come in a few days!

The Uniques - Lesson Of Love (Can't Do Without It) / Winston Williams - DJ Choice

I was surprised to see that I hadn't posted this one yet. One of my all time favorite Slim Smith tunes and with a killer b-side!

*Repost* Tabby & The Diamond - Oh No Baby / Version

***Repost***

Here it is, as promised. Admittedly, its in pretty bad shape, but its a cool piece.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Last time I posted this, it skipped through the intro due to a crack. I managed to adjust the cracked area so that this recording plays right through with no skips, much better than the last upload! The b-side would skip on the first rotation of the b-side, so I had to drop the needle just inside the beginning of the song.

This is the first song recorded for The Mighty Diamonds, under the psuedonym "Tabby & The Diamond". Tabby was the nickname of the lead singer of the trio, Donald Shaw. The recording here is produced by Stranger Cole and released on his personal label, which is a bit of a rarity in itself.

I'll put some super clean records up for the next few to make up for this one.

*Repost* Elpedo Burke - Madgie / Mighty Cloud Band - Madgie Dub

I'm reposting this one not only because someone requested a fixed link, but because this song is great. I'll correct most fixed links on their original page.

This is no longer the only Abeng label 45" I have, but this is still my favorite of the ones I've picked up. Enjoy!

John Holt - Working Kind / Unknown Instrumental

Sorry for the long time between posts! I meant to do this one on Monday, the US's Labor Day, but never quite got around to it. A great 1970 John Holt, Duke Reid production on the a-side and a rootsy instrumental on the back. The b-side gets a little nasty towards the end, so this one is more for the a-side (which isn't the cleanest itself!). If anyone knows the name and artist for the b-side, please share.

Laurel Aitken - I Can't Stop Loving You / El Paso

Nice cover of the Ray Charles tune here by the legendary Laurel Aitken. Aitken was in the business from the beginning, recording during the 50s on 78s, before 45s became massively widespread. However, this one is from '71. Enjoy!

Jimmy Riley (As Chanel 5) - Love Brother / Old Kent Road

This one was on the most recent Ustream broadcast. I originally thought it was just a mislabeled Slim Smith's "My Conversation" but closer inspection has shown that it really isn't. This cut has lead organ, which I assume is provided by Jimmy Riley. I found his name for this disc through Roots Knotty Roots.

Ustream Broadcast

I decided to give this a shot rather than a traditional post. Consider it a preview of whats to come. Some of these records will likely show up in the next few postings.

I've come to realize that the recording output on my preamp bypasses the equalizer and high/low pass filters. So, at least for the ones with surface noise, kill the highs and boost the bass and a good chunk of the unwanted sound will disappear.

Lennox Brown - Gits Brown
Slim Smith - Can't Do Without It (My Story)
The Jailbreakers - Work It Up
K.C. White - Man No Dead
Beverley's All Stars - Just In Time

1973 - Delroy Wilson - Your Love / Caught You Red Handed

1973 here, and by now Delroy Wilson's voice has matured quite a bit. He's one of Jamaica's artists that started at an impressively young age, so you can hear his voice mature through his catalog. Wilson started his career at 14 years old with Coxsone in 1962. As you'd expect with any 14 year old, his prepubescent voice on his early singles was leagues higher than we hear 11 years later in '73. It's fun to hear how his voice has developed though, so its worth looking out for a chronological compilation of his.

"Your Love" is Wilson's take on The Supreme's megahit, "Where Did Our Love Go." I really don't have much to say about these two tunes except that they're both great. Delroy Wilson is one of favorite singers. He's got an unmistakable and inimitable sound and I rarely find a song in his wide discography that I dislike. Sooo check it out.

1974 and 1975 next, then I'll head back to the 60s for a while, stay tuned!
